I have to agree with Gordon Hill: you have to play Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes in every game, together now.
If you’re Marcus Rashford you’re wanting them on the pitch with you. The pass Pogba played for him after he came on was incredible. That sort of pass doesn’t happen without those players on the pitch. You’d have Rashford running for the ball, looking for it. He’s not having to do the hard work and grinding anymore. He doesn’t have to do the work of other people.
To be honest, though, I’m looking at Anthony Martial and I’m not seeing anything different. I’m still seeing the same old story with him.
I was looking to him to make a point against Tottenham but I would think Ole now has a decision to make on Wednesday against a team with three centre-halves. You need a centre-forward who is going to hold the ball up and allow Pogba, Fernandes and Rashford to play off him. Those defenders need to worry about the movement of the striker in-between them.
Ighalo is good at that. He can hold it for players and release it at the right time, or he brings the foul. I don’t think you can go with Martial on Wednesday. Yes, it’s harsh, but you have Ighalo – use him. He’s desperate to impress. He can’t believe he’s still at Manchester United. Give him that chance to deliver. Don’t let him be a bit-part. Go for it.
Defenders will get wise to the type of game Martial plays. I’m not doubting his talent but he drops off and top defenders don’t allow him the space.
David De Gea got a lot of criticism for the Spurs goal. Was it deserved? To be honest I think that’s a bit harsh. This is a player who has got United out of trouble many times before and he is still an excellent goalkeeper. Yes, he has dipped, and maybe he could have done better for that goal, but there was plenty of blame to go around and I think it should have been stopped before it got there.
As far as David’s place in the team goes – a lot of people are saying United should keep Dean Henderson at the club next season. I agree, but I would say to do that to raise David’s game and focus his concentration. Maybe he has become too secure and he needs that edge again. I have no doubt he will recover – just look at that excellent save he pulled off seconds after the goal was conceded. How many goalkeepers could do that?
