Manchester United prepare to face LASK tonight in their long-delayed, if not long-awaited, second leg of their Europa League tie.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had admitted he will take advantage of the 5-0 advantage his side earned in the first leg and give some fringe players a chance to get some match fitness.
The first of those confirmed to play was Jesse Lingard, who scored United’s last Premier League goal of the season.
“Jesse [Lingard] will be starting tomorrow, but the team won’t be too different to the last time we played LASK away in March,” said Solskjaer yesterday. “We know that it will be a difficult game. It wasn’t a 5-0 game [in the first leg]. We scored three goals in the last five, so of course we know that we have to perform. There’s opportunities for players [who do well in this game] to play in the quarters if we get through.”
“You’ve got a trophy to fight for. Some players enjoy that pressure of having to do something. Of course we want to get to the next step on this journey with this team and win things. We’ve been to the semis in the FA Cup and into the semis of the Carabao Cup and third in the league, but now we want to kick on because all these players want to win trophies and this team needs to know that we can go past the semis and get to a final.”
United’s squad strength remains relatively weak – so, for example, although Brandon Williams is the most senior left-back available, he will probably start tonight before being replaced in the second half. Harry Maguire, as captain, can expect the nod ahead of Victor Lindelof, but he too can expect a second half rest if United are cruising. Mendi, Fosu-Mensah and Laird are all among the names United fans will be keen to see given a chance.
