Mason Greenwood’s performance against Bournemouth has certainly got the football world talking about his wonderful talent and potential, not just two incredible goals but his maturity in possession and his rotation and intelligence to find space.
It certainly makes you think this lad is the real deal.
In terms of how should this affect the club going all out to sign Jadon Sancho… well, I’m not so sure, to win trophies you need world class players and in Sancho and Greenwood you have two players who could be up there with the very best in 5 years maybe even less. Add that to Rashford, Martial, Pogba and Fernadez and it is starting to look like a squad that should, not might, compete for the biggest prizes.
I don’t think Sancho would stifle Greenwood’s progress, in my opinion the more quality the more competition for places the better. If Greenwood performs at the level he did against Bournemouth he will start, and be the first name on the team sheet… well, maybe second after Bruno.
The best players thrive off being put under pressure and relish the challenge of being number one – and a player of Sancho’s undoubted quality would most definitely add to that competition in the forward positions. Although, young players would never agree – and neither the fans at times – but is also important to manage the load put on players, particularly in their teenage years, so there will also be times when Greenwood will be taken out the team to recharge the batteries to go again.
The job of the wide players is a physically demanding one and having options off the bench to affect a game is of utmost importance in the modern game.
Paul Pogba looks a different player since returning from injury and for me is playing his best football of his Manchester United career.
His body language and demeanor look so much more positive and the big smile is seen on a much more regular occurrence. He looks like he’s enjoying his football and long may that continue because on his day he is a top, top player. He and Fernandes complement each other really well and can really make the team tick.
Probably for the first time in his second spell at the club, Pogba will recognize the club have a very realistic chance of competing and I’m sure he will want to be part of that. He showed when winning the World Cup he is a real team player and accepted that Mbappe and Griezmann were probably the stars of the team so I really don’t think it would be any sort of issue or competition with Bruno to be the top dog as it were.
The current front three are incredibly exciting to watch and are blessed with truly wonderful pace and athleticism. I would say they have the potential to be right up that if they can carry on improving and performing at such a high level. The rotation is very smooth and slick and with all three of them capable of being able to play in all of the front 3 positions it makes it incredibly hard for the opposition’s defence to deal with.
If we end up adding Sancho to the mix it makes for a highly exciting future for the club. It is definitely too early to compare with the front 3 of Rooney, Tevez and Ronaldo which was a joy to behold, and of course, you can’t forget the famous four of Cole, Yorke, Sheringham, and Ole himself, albeit that front line did play in a slightly different shape as they were immortalised at club for the treble win and much more.
If we can look back in 10 years and have similar memories of the current forward players to the seven I’ve just mentioned I am pretty sure it would have been a very successful era for the club – and, amazingly, Mason will still only be 28!
