Manchester United have named their team to face Arsenal this afternoon.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has decided on more tactical changes after a run of four different games and different systems – as one would have expected he would do, following Marcus Rashford’s outstanding contribution from the bench in the Champions League midweek, and Bruno Fernandes having the luxury of a rare rest.
Solskjaer spoke about the unpredictability of the league in his pre-match press conference.
“It’s very unpredictable,” he said. “It’s going to be difficult to predict and a very long season. It lasted until the end of July for most of the teams, for us it was almost the end of August, and we started again in the middle of September without a break.
“I talked about it, Pep [Guardiola] has talked about it, all the managers are talking about it. We have to look after the players, both physically and mentally.”
Harry Maguire has had both of those elements of his game questioned but has answered them with a handful of strong performances in recent weeks.
“With what’s going on at the moment, we’re playing so frequently,” Maguire said. “It’s the start of a season where we want to go on a journey and at the end of it look back with great memories. We’re only at the beginning. It’s going to be a tough, long, hard season but one in which we’re building towards something special.”
“Every game at Old Trafford is important to win,” he continued. “Obviously, this season, we haven’t been able to win at Old Trafford in the Premier League yet but it’s still early days. It was a much improved performance against Chelsea, a performance which I feel deserved to win the game. We had the better chances. It was tight and edgy in the first half but in the second half we pushed on, controlled the game and maybe should have gone on to win three points.”
“When Arsenal come to the ground, you know it’s going to be a tough game. They’ve been impressing lately. They’ve improved a lot, they brought a new manager in last season. But it’s really important that we focus on ourselves like we’ve been doing in recent weeks. If we look at our performance, our talent can shine through and we can get three points.”
