Manchester United have named their team to face Newcastle United this afternoon.
While most eyes have been focused on the potential debut of Cristiano Ronaldo, there has been plenty of talk about Jadon Sancho, Donny van de Beek and Fred as international duty came to an end.
“You always cross your fingers that they come back fit,” Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told ManUtd.com. “They’ve all come back with a good mood, they’ve had some good results, there’s been some goals and those who have been here have worked hard, prepared well and of course, it’s an exciting game for everyone.
“Jadon has come back in and trained the last couple of days. He’s disappointed he couldn’t play for England but determined to be fit and he’s available. That’s a positive.”
Solskjaer confirmed that Ronaldo would make his second debut. “He’s been having a good pre-season with Juventus,” he said. “He’s played for the national team, he’s had a good week with us here. He’ll definitely be on the pitch at some point, that’s for sure.”
Meanwhile, Fred was initially barred from playing by the Brazilian FA. “I think it’s a lose-lose-lose situation for everyone: national teams, players, clubs. It’s been a farce, really,” Solskjaer said. “The players want to play but we all know what kind of situation we find ourselves in the last year-and-a-half with the pandemic, the travels and everyone trying to limit the spread of the virus.
“We’ve worked really hard before this to try to find a way. Private jets, you know, there are ways of getting them in and out but all the decisions have gone against the players, that’s for sure.
“They want to play for their national teams, they want to play for their clubs, but they’re not allowed. For me, I’m disappointed with whole thing. Common sense might not be so common anymore.
“We need to prepare for the game without Fred but still, fingers crossed, that some sense can come into people’s minds and that we can use him.”
However, late last night, it was confirmed that Fred would be eligible for the game.
