Exclusive : “Ole’s Not Mourinho : He Hasn’t Lost The United Dressing Room” – Former Defender

Former Manchester United defender Scott Wootton has leapt to the defence of manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after some mischievous suggestions that he had lost the dressing room at the club.

The defeat at Leicester last week looked ominous, and Old Trafford saw boos at half-time with United 2-0 down to Atalanta. These questions were put to Solskjaer after he saw his team win 3-2 and he angrily batted them away.

And Wootton, who played in Sir Alex Ferguson’s last season, insists that he believes Solskjaer isn’t the type of man to lose the backing of his players – an opinion put into sharper focus after Jose Mourinho’s savage insult to his Roma players last night.

“He definitely hasn’t lost the dressing room,” Wootton said exclusively on this week’s Talking Devils podcast. “They’re just going through a tough patch and I think Ole’s the type of guy, a good guy, he’s not the type of player who would lose the dressing room. I don’t think he’s like a Mourinho where he throws players under the bus or publicly shaming them. Ole’s not that type so I don’t buy into this.”

United’s comeback showcased the bipolar nature of their personality at present, but Wootton insists that the overall performance was better than a 0-2 comeback to a 3-2 win suggests.

“The end of the game was great but I go back to the point about fine margins,” he says. “Fred had a couple of good chances in the first half and missed them. If they’re taken, if Rashford scores the one that hit the bar, then there’s a completely different reaction to the game at the end.”

“Atalanta didn’t have that many great chances other than the goals. The performance is exactly the same but the reaction would be chalk and cheese if one of those other chances were taken instead.”
